Why Consider Sedation/Sleep Dentistry?

Opting for dental sedation provides you with the opportunity to ease dental anxiety and avoid delaying your care. Some of the situations we recommend opting for sedation include:

  • Past negative experiences
  • Mild to severe dental phobia
  • Complex treatment needs
  • Special needs
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Multiple procedures in one visit
  • Sensitive gag reflex

Types of Dental Sedation Available

Not all types of sedation used in a dentist’s office are the same. Our downtown Seattle dental office offers two types of sedatives to choose from, depending on your preferences and care needs.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

— Nitrous oxide is a gentle, inhaled analgesic with mild and quickly reversible sedation benefits. Using a soft cup that’s placed over your nose, you’ll inhale a combination of pure oxygen and nitrous gas. Most people feel a deep sense of relaxation.

The great thing about nitrous oxide sedation is that it works quickly and wears off just as fast. You can even drive yourself home afterward. The effects are fully reversible within about five minutes of it being turned off.

Although you’re conscious, laughing gas decreases your perception of discomfort. You’ll be less sensitive to your dental treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

— For patients with elevated levels of fear, anxiety, or dental phobia, Dr. Vo may recommend Oral Conscious Sedation (OCS). With OCS, a pill is taken about an hour before treatment, making you feel relaxed and somewhat sleepy. Upon arrival, our highly trained dental team takes great care you, assessing response to the medication. If additional medication is needed, we administer it at the practice.

What to Expect At Your Dental Visit

Before treatment begins, our care team makes certain you are resting comfortably and ready to move forward with treatment. During treatment, most patients fall into a dozing state but remain responsive enough to answer our questions. Throughout the process, our care team monitors blood pressure, oxygen intake, and heart rate. Once treatment is complete, a specially trained care team member stays with you until you are alert and ready to go home with a companion. As mentioned previously, a companion is not needed for laughing gas.

Drs. Vo frequently performs complex restoration procedures, including the placement of dental implants, cavity repair and smile makeovers with porcelain veneers, while patients rest.

“Do I Qualify for Dental Sedation?””

During your new patient exam and consultation, we’ll perform a thorough medical history review to determine if there are any factors that would contraindicate the use of safe prescription-grade sedatives. Please be sure to bring a list of any medications (including over the counter supplements or holistic drugs) that you’re currently taking. If you’ve recently had surgery or been hospitalized, let us know.

We’re happy to collaborate with your primary care provider should there be any specific concerns. Depending on the type of sedative being used, our services are safe for people of all ages, including young children.
